Study Finds that Naviance Use is a Strong Predictor of Applying to College

Naviance usage shown to directly contribute to improving college application rates.

A recent peer-reviewed study from the University of Arkansas and the Denton (TX) Independent School District found that using Naviance was a strong predictor of students applying to college by making college and career information available, helping students create individualized learning plans, and establishing a college-going culture.

The study explored how Naviance influences college application rates by pursuing two research questions:

Research Question 1: Does the length of time students have access to Naviance predict their college application rate?

Research Question 2: Does the number of times students access Naviance predict their college application rate?

The study examined five dependent variables that were likely to be good predictors of college application rates: gender, socioeconomic status, GPA, number of years of using Naviance, and the average annual logins to Naviance. Findings indicated that the average number of times a student logged into Naviance accounted for the largest variance in the college application rates.

Additional findings from this study offer evidence that:

  • The average number of times a student logs into Naviance is a stronger predictor of applying to college than a student’s socioeconomic status.
  • Naviance Usage directly contributes to increases in college application rates.
  • There is a direct positive correlation between the number of times students access Naviance and their college application rate.
  • There is a direct positive correlation between the length of time students have access to Naviance and their college application rate.
  • The average number of times a student logs into Naviance is a stronger predictor of applying to college than other factors such as gender, GPA and socioeconomic status.

Study Abstract
High school counselors play a key role in increasing students’ access to college. With increasing student‐to‐ counselor‐ratios as well as demands on their time, school counselors often lack the ability to provide adequate college counseling. In this article, we explored how school counselors can use educational technology, specifically the online program Naviance, to supplement college counseling in an effort to increase college access for all students. Results showing that students who logged in to Naviance more frequently had higher college application rates indicated that Naviance is an appropriate way for school counselors to promote college access.
