I don’t know about you, but I can barely believe we’re already coming to the end of January. What a month in education! Change of preference and main offer rounds for our recent year 12 graduates have concluded, with a mixture of celebration and commiserations around the country. In addition to this annual flurry of activity, we can throw in heated debate (and controversy?) around the national curriculum and its reviewers. And let’s not forget some record-breaking weather conditions as icing on the cake!
If anything has become increasingly clear to me throughout the curriculum debate, it is that we are focusing far too much on the content and structure that we expect teachers to adhere to, and forgetting that our teachers have the single biggest opportunity to influence and improve a student’s outcomes and experience.
What if we worked harder to equip teachers with the skills and technology that would enable them to spend more time teaching and less time snowed under by paperwork and bureaucracy? We should be encouraging and enabling teachers to provide consistent and explicit feedback to students in real time, rather than spending hours compiling standard report cards with debatable meaning behind the messages. The more I learn about the increased pressure and scrutiny our teachers are subject to, the more passionate I am about finding a way to help them do what THEY are passionate about … educating our future!
I feel very privileged to be working with some of the most well-versed experts in the field and see these questions and idealisms translate into REAL solutions for our schools. Learning more and more about Edumate, I am not only bowled over by the passion of the teams involved with this academic management system, but extremely proud to now be a part of it!
What am I looking forward to the most in 2014? Learning, integrating and showcasing the innovative and sophisticated ways in which Edumate and its team continue to develop, with the intent focus on student advancement. This will certainly be a year of discovery for me, and I can’t wait to share my journey with you all!
Happy January everyone!
