The Urgent Need for College and Career Awareness in Elementary School

This executive briefing explores the topic of college and career awareness in early childhood. Studies cited in professional literature suggest that early childhood education asserts a strong influence upon educational and career goals. Three contextual influences affecting self-perceptions of interests and aspirations of elementary-aged learners were identified following a review of the professional educational research on college and career awareness in young children in Google Scholar, JSTOR, Academia.EDU, ERIC, the Institute of Education Sciences, and Google.

This briefing further examines the three contextual influences that affect self-perceptions of interests and aspirations of elementary-aged learners: socioeconomic status and poverty; gender norms; and parental expectations and social norms.
